Do I have to leave my NHS GP to use your service?
Is one of the most common questions we are asked and the answer is no. Private GP services work alongside your NHS service and how you use each one is down to you. Some patients choose to use the private service for all of their GP needs. This includes private repeat prescriptions, private routine blood tests and private referrals. Some choose to use the NHS service for their repeat medicaitons and routine blood tests, but see their private GP surgery for new issues, flare ups and urgent matters. And some people will use their private GP surgery for just one off short term issues then return to their NHS GP for everything else.
Will the private GP have access to my NHS medical records?
There is no automatic access for private GPs to your NHS GP records. If you have a complex medical history you could:
- Access the NHS app and show the details to your private GP in the consultation
- Ask for a copy of your NHS GP notes from your NHS GP, they should provide this for free.
- Or just write your own summary of your health and bring it to the consultation.
In most cases your private GP will be able to gather the information required through the discussion in your consultation.
Will my private consultation go back in to my main NHS GP notes?
The full consultation notes are kept seperately on our private GP surgery’s secure records. If you give permission we will write to your GP with a summary of our consultation, including medicaitons used. You do not have to give permission to contact your NHS GP, but we think it is safer overall if you do.
Will my NHS GP continue to prescribe medications started during a private consultation?
If your private consultation ends with adjustments in medications which would normally be done by an NHS GP, then your NHS GP may just update your repeat prescription list automatically. You might need to ask them to do so. One of the benefits of a private sector GP is we can use treatments which are not automatically available on the NHS and in those cases it is unlikely your NHS GP would continue to prescribe the medication. You would need to continue getting those medications from your private GP.
Will my NHS GP be cross about me seeing a private GP?
Most GPs are going to be happy with someone seeing a private GP instead of using up one of the NHS appointments. It simply means they will be able to see one different patient who would otherwise have missed out. We are aware of how NHS GPs work and conduct our services to work well with them. For example our letters to NHS GPs are written in a way which is quick for them to process. We don’t give your NHS GP a list of extra work to complete and we make a point of being realistic with our patients with what they can expect from their NHS GP.
