Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common condition that can affect people of all ages, though they are particularly frequent in women. At our private GP surgery, we offer prompt assessment, diagnosis, and treatment to help relieve symptoms quickly and prevent complications.

A UTI occurs when bacteria enter the urinary system, which includes the bladder, urethra, ureters, and kidneys. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract (the bladder and urethra), but if left untreated, they can spread to the kidneys and become more serious.

Common symptoms of a UTI include a burning sensation when passing urine, needing to urinate more frequently than usual, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and lower abdominal discomfort. Some patients may also experience fatigue or feel generally unwell. In more severe cases, particularly if the kidneys are involved, symptoms can include fever, back pain, nausea, and vomiting.

UTIs are typically caused by bacteria from the digestive system entering the urinary tract. Risk factors can include sexual activity, pregnancy, menopause, certain types of contraception, and underlying medical conditions such as diabetes. Some individuals may also be more prone to recurrent infections.

Diagnosis is usually straightforward and involves discussing your symptoms and providing a urine sample for testing. In some cases, further investigations may be recommended, especially if infections are recurrent or symptoms are atypical.

Treatment commonly involves a short course of antibiotics, which is usually highly effective. Our GPs will select the most appropriate medication based on your symptoms and medical history. We also provide guidance on symptom relief and preventive measures, such as staying well hydrated, practising good personal hygiene, and making lifestyle adjustments where appropriate.

If you experience frequent UTIs, we can offer a more tailored approach, including further tests, preventive strategies, and, in some cases, longer-term management plans.

Seeking early medical advice is important to ensure quick recovery and to reduce the risk of complications. If you are experiencing symptoms of a urinary tract infection, our team is here to provide discreet, professional care with same-day appointments available.
